Expensive hip surgery for man soon to be executed
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A condemned killer’s fight to receive surgery for agonizing hip pain has pushed Kentucky officials into an uncomfortable debate over security and politics.
Emails and memos obtained by The Associated Press show corrections officials struggling to reconcile their duty to provide medical care with the political ramifications of spending tens of thousands of dollars for surgery on a man they plan to execute. A key problem would turn out to be security issues that led several hospitals to balk at treating inmate Robert Foley.
“Hip replacement for an inmate who has exhausted all appeals and will soon be executed?” Kentucky State Penitentiary warden Phil Parker wrote in an email on Nov. 22, 2010. “I can see this making Fox News on a slow news day, maybe even on a busy news day. ”
Prison officials also made contingency plans to call off the surgery if Gov. Steve Beshear set an execution date, and they considered whether to consult with him about the procedure. Full Article

China launches investigation into fake pigs’ ears
The bogus ears were discovered in a market in Ganzhou city in the eastern province of Jiangxi in late March after a customer complained of a strange smell when cooking them, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported.
Food safety officials tested the “ears” and found they had been made from gelatin and the chemical sodium oleate, commonly used in the production of soap.
China’s government has repeatedly vowed to improve food safety as people grow increasingly alarmed about the quality of what they eat, but scandals still occur due to weak enforcement and unscrupulous business practices.
The China Daily quoted an expert as giving a sure-fire method for telling real ears – a popular delicacy – from fake, saying the genuine article should have hair and small blood vessels. Full Article

Man gets caught in garbage chute hiding from girlfriend
Domestic arguments between lovers will often end in tears or long silences – but they usually don’t end with emergency services having to extract a frightened man from a high-rise apartment’s garbage chute.
The local fast-response team in Tyumen, Russia, can be forgiven for thinking their latest call-out was a bit of a wind-up, when they were told a man had been heard calling for help from within the walls of a residential apartment building on Ulitsa 30 Let Pobedi.
When the fire service arrived, officers quickly discovered one of the building’s residents caught the garbage disposal chute – his head just visible from one of the latches that residents can use to put their refuse through on each floor. Full Article

Museum’s sex exhibit for teens sparks outrage
A Canadian museum hosting a controversial sex exhibit for teens has raised the age limit for admission following outrage from parents and lawmakers.
“Sex: A Tell-All Exhibition,” at Canada’s Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa, includes screens displaying aroused genitals, naked statues with light-up erogenous zones and video displays prompting visitors to answer sexually explicit questions, the Ottawa Sun reports.
The exhibit was reportedly designed to “fill in gaps” left by changes to sexual education programs in the region.
The exhibit initially targeted children as young as 12. The age for admission has now been raised to 16, but younger children can still see the exhibit on field trips, the Ottawa Sun reports. Full Article

A Utah high school is learning the hard way that the government is serious about nudging students away from food it doesn’t want them to consume.
