Recently I read a news release regarding a website called YourFreeMusicDownloads.Com, claiming to offer free mp3 downloads by filling out surveys.  I figured it was a scam, but I went through the entire process to check it out for myself. 

The website first asks for a valid email address, and the addresses for two friends.  I opted to provide that information with my own email address, which is heavily filtered, and two free email services. 

The next step is to fill out a survey.  I signed up for the first survey on the list, and proceeded to complete every step.  As it turns out, the survey was a legitimate company called YourTopBrands.com, and after signing up for three services they gave me a voucher for a free $100 Visa gift card.

I waited several weeks for access to the mp3 downloads, but received no access code.  I then contacted YourTopBrands.com to ask if they were affiliated with the referring website.  The answer was No.  YourTopBrands.com has never heard of, nor do they have any business relations with YourFreeMusicDownloads.com.  I forwarded this information to contact@yourfreemusicdownloads.com and waited for a response, which never arrived.

I waited several more weeks, and still had no access to the promised mp3 downloads.  However, my inbox now receives hundreds of spam messages per day (graciously filtered at the mail server).  Now that I have established that YourFreeMusicDownloads.Com is indeed a scam, I did some research on Google. 

As it turns out, the same contact phone number and address are listed for several other shady websites located in California.  Top it off with the fact that the retard is a webhosting reseller under the domain svws.net.  The funny part is, the phone number has a Florida area code, and the business that resides at the address listed for YourFreeMusicDownloads.com is actually SK Donut Shop.  Here are the sites I’ve found so far:

I’ve spent the past week researching my options for TV without a subscription.  Since I cancelled my Dish Network subscription, I’ve looked into FTA (Free To Air) satellite systems, and streaming video on the web.  My plan is to build a multimedia system with a digital projector, in which I can watch TV shows and play DVD’s on a large High Definition screen, with surround sound.

Today I received an email from Joost for their beta program.  I think I have found my first choice for streaming video.  This program is absolutely perfect!

 Joost provides a simple 1-click installation, and prompts you to create an account.  After installation, the program reequires no setup.  Your streaming video is ready to watch, fullscreen, right out of the box.  There are hundreds of high quality shows available at your fingertips, and you can watch them anytime you want. 

This is the wave of the future.  With streaming broadcasts from networks like CBS, NBC, and ABC, satellite and cable television will be obsolete.  If you’d like to eliminate your monthly subscription to cable or satellite, I recommend taking a look at Joost.

I had a recent episode with a company called Protect America, an alarm monitoring service with whom I have been a loyal customer for over 4 years.  I purchased the service in 2003, after my home was burglarized.

Unfortunately, the industry in which I am employed has been slow for the past few months.  I decided it was time to start cutting back on my monthly bills to help support my family.  I cancelled my home phone, cut back my internet service to basic service, cancelled my satellite TV, and cancelled my alarm monitoring service.

All the companies I contacted were fairly easy to deal with — except one:  Protect America.  These corporate criminals use legal binding contracts to trap customers into keeping their service.  After using their service for over 4 years, I had a legitimate reason for cancelling.  I simply can’t afford it. 

The customer service representative offered to give me a lower rate of $29.95 a month.  Well, this was still significantly higher than the $17.95 a month offered by The Alarm Store, so I kindly declined the offer, and asked that she simply cancel the service.  She then referred me to section 2 of the agreement, which I signed over 4 years ago.  The agreement clearly states:

The initial terms of this Agreement shall be 2 years, starting on the first day of the month that Company or its Authorized Dealer installs and connects the Equipment.  This Agreement will automatically continue for successive two-year renewal terms unless the Customer or Company gives written notice of cancellation to the other at least 60 days prior to the end of any initial or renewal term hereof.

There it is in black and white.  I’m stuck paying $45.00 a month for service I don’t even want for the next 18 months.  That’s $810 I could be using to buy groceries for my family.  Well, being the kind-hearted people they are, they offered to cancel the account after I pay a fee of $253.  That’s $253 I could be using to buy groceries for my family.

Sadly, I signed the stupid agreement without knowing that 4 years down the line I would need that extra money to feed my family.  So, I agreed to pay the $253 and walk away from the contract.  Let this be a lesson to all the other consumers in the world looking to secure their homes.  Signing a contract with Protect America is no different from allowing a criminal to walk into your house and steal cash from your home.  Save yourself some money and headaches by signing up with a reputable monitoring service.
